THE CHALLENGE

Competing without owning the network.

In wireless, speed is a competitive advantage. But unlike traditional carriers, Xfinity Mobile operates on another company's cellular network, limiting its ability to differentiate on performance.

Comcast had something its competitors didn't: an extensive WiFi network spanning millions of homes and public hotspots.

The opportunity was to turn that infrastructure into a meaningful advantage for mobile customers.

THE APPROACH

What if connectivity worked everywhere?

The original concept focused on delivering faster speeds through Comcast's public WiFi network. But that meant customers could receive a speed benefit outside their homes without receiving the same benefit inside them.

Comcast's public and private WiFi networks had historically operated as separate products, managed by different teams. However, customers view connectivity as a single experience, regardless of which network their device is connected to.

We had an opportunity to bring both networks together for the first converged experience on the market.

Making the vision possible.

Bringing public and private WiFi together required aligning teams, priorities, and investments around one customer experience—not just solving technical challenges. As product lead, I aligned engineering, leadership, finance, and marketing to develop and launch Comcast’s first strategy of its kind. We also partnered with Apple on privacy-preserving device identification, built entitlement infrastructure, and coordinated software updates across residential gateways. Together, these technologies powered one connected experience and featured prominently in iOS 17 and iOS 18, exclusively for Comcast and Xfinity Mobile.

PowerBoost presented an unusual design challenge: how could we make customers aware of a valuable new benefit without asking them to activate it or take action?

We advocated for a fully automatic experience: no enrollment, settings changes, or new behaviors. Eligible customers would simply connect as usual and receive faster speeds.

To make this invisible benefit tangible, we designed an in-app message confirming when a device received PowerBoost.

The best experience required zero steps.

Delivering impact, everywhere.

Rather than wait for the entire experience to be ready, I led a phased launch strategy that delivered the public WiFi benefit first, while development continued on the more complex private network integration.

This allowed us to deliver value sooner, measure performance, and build momentum for the broader release.

The results were significant.

Following PowerBoost's launch, Ookla research reported a 150% increase in Xfinity Mobile speeds. Internal network data also showed an increase in daily connected devices, although those counts could not be translated into unique customers.

The outcome was more than faster connectivity. PowerBoost transformed an existing infrastructure advantage into a differentiated mobile experience—one that required no additional effort from the customer.
